Food packaging or food packing is the art, science and commerce of placing the food in a specialized packaging container in a such a manner that, the shelf life of the food product is enhanced while maintaining products quality and safety.

Food packaging system especially designed for storing the foods (foods, fruits, vegetables, their processed product, value added product and other types of processed foods), representing one of the most important aspect involved in the food industry, which maintain the physical, chemical and  biological behaviour of the food. The main aim of food packaging is to maintain the products quality during its journey from the production centre (Farmer or industry) to the ultimate consumers.

ADVANTAGES OF PACKAGING OF FOOD PRODUCTS:

1. Increases the shelf-life of the product

2. Improves the apperacnce of the product

3. Makes the transportation convinient

4. Maintains the quality of the food product

Different types of packaging materials are used for storage of food product. 

REQUIREMENT FOR A GOOD PACKAGING MATERIAL:

1. It must be of low cost.

2. Attractive in apparance and must have the capacity for printability.

3. Free from toxic chemicals.

4. It must have gas and odour protection.

5. Packaging materials must be hygenic.

6. Adoptive to a large  range of temperature.

7. Trasnsarence behaviours etc.
